How to reduce your plastic waste

Most people are worried about the problem of unwanted plastic in the world today. We need to think more carefully about how we deal with this very useful material in our lives. More importantly, we also need to think about how we dispose of it. Fortunately, there are at least three easy things you can do to reduce the impact of plastic, when you dispose of it from your home or workplace.

Three easy ways to minimise plastic waste

Step 1:

Stop buying products that rely on single-use plastic

Bottles and bags that can be used several times are much kinder to the environment. You don’t have to stop using plastic altogether. It’s just a matter of taking advantage of the durability of plastic, rather than throwing it away to cause problems for years and years. Use it, wash it, and use it again. How hard can it be?

Step 2:

Consider buying eco-friendly alternatives

Society’s love affair with plastic is not likely to end any time soon. It is just so practical, so flexible, so colourful. Designers love it because of the range of textures and shapes they can make. Parents and children love it because it is hardwearing and easy to clean. These days, many alternative materials can match the qualities of plastic, without the added complication of unsafe disposal after use. We now have some fantastic, eco-friendly options such as wood, bamboo, blended fabrics and biodegradable composites. Remember this, when you are choosing your next domestic item. If you think outside the box, you might be surprised by some stylish and practical, non-plastic alternatives.

Step 3:

Recycle, recycle, recycle

There will surely come a time when you definitely don’t need a plastic item any more. You might think that it’s time to throw it in the dustbin and invest in something new. Hold it right there! What about finding a way to recycle your unwanted plastic waste items? There may be a local playgroup leader who would be delighted to accept unwanted toys. Take your bags to a charity shop, and your gadgets to an electronics repair and recycling unit. Use colour-coded storage that keeps rubbish in separate categories for safe disposal at your local recycling plant.
